BACKGROUND

Art students gather info from disparate sources—print catalogues, friends and artists they know or follow.

This leaves room for lost opportunities both for students and art schools.

I set out to explore a solution to simplify and centralize the process of class discovery.

"I want to look in one place to find all the information I need about available art classes.”

Iterating on the design, I focused on reusable UI elements and began defining a visual language that reflected on the bold and playful side of learning and creativity.

designing a solution

I synthesized pain points and student needs found through my team's user research. Then I developed features to help students navigate the class-finding challenges and to encourage them to contribute to a creative community.

ONBOARDING

"I want someone to call me and invite me to the class—a friend who knows what I’m personally looking for."

Customized from the start

I developed an on-boarding sequence that sets up a personalized experience based on:

  • learning goals

  • subject area

Personalized class search

“The class needs to be easy to get to based on my location and schedule.”

One size does not fit all

I designed an extensive filtering system that allows users to find results relevant to them.

class REVIEWS

“Julia was doing it. She really liked it. I thought it would be cool.”

DIRECT QUOTE FROM USER INTERVIEWS

The best measure for whether someone would take a class was whether it had been recommended by someone they know and trust.

Discovery method

Inviting student feedback

I designed an interactive way for students to leave feedback and share their experiences with others.

To lessen cognitive load for the user, I chunked the feedback flow into discrete steps.

Centralizing and simplifying class discovery

Through user research, we identified the primary drivers and pain points for art students selecting classes.

Leveraging these insights, I created a playful and streamlined tool for students to discover and navigate through classes and workshops based on their individual needs and preferences.
